The Fort Wayne Medical Education Program was initiated in July 1967, to provide good medical education in Fort Wayne. Originally participants were enrolled in a rotating internship. In 1972, the Program established an accredited Family Practice Residency to prepare qualified medical student graduates to become Board Certified in the specialty of Family Medicine. The hope is that many of the Program's graduates will remain in Northeast Indiana. The Program is accredited for thirty Family Practice Residents and four Transitional Residents.

The Program includes Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education and Undergraduate Medical Education in co-operation with the Indiana University School of Medicine and it's satellite program on the IPFW campus. An operational agreement between the Fort Wayne Medical Society Foundation, Lutheran Hospital, Parkview Hospital and St. Joseph Medical Center provides for the governance of the Program.
