Grace Mastrangelo – Serving with Grace

The FW Medical Society and Medical Society Alliance work together to support medical excellence in the Fort Wayne community. When the FW Medical Society Alliance first heard that Dr. Mike Mastrangelo had been chosen to receive the Medical Society’s ‘Physician Exemplar Award’, the Alliance felt this would be the perfect opportunity to celebrate our 75 years by recognizing
Mike’s wife, Grace, and establishing a ‘Serving with Grace Award’.

Grace was an amazing example of a ‘servant attitude’. Grace and Mike met, married and moved to Fort Wayne where he would begin his lifelong career practicing medicine. She supported her him during his long medical career, raised Grace Mastrangelo four children, cared for her mother and was a devoted grandmother. She cherished her family and valued time spent with them.

She was an active Alliance member who regularly attended our social events, book club and investment club. She readily invited and encouraged new physician spouses to attend Alliance activities and made them feel welcome here.

She was also involved with her faith community at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s Church.

I first met Grace through the ‘Trillium Garden Club’, where she shared her love of gardening and wisdom from years of enjoyment in her yard.

Grace Mastrangelo simply made the time to ‘do it all’. It is through this example of “serving with grace” that she set a standard demonstrating that it is possible to be a supportive wife; loving daughter, mother and grandmother; serving and demonstrating your faith; actively being involved in the medical Alliance; and still find time to have interests such as gardening and reading.

Grace had a heart of gold and a generous spirit. She was an example of a life well lived. We would like to recognize Grace tonight by awarding our first recipient of the FW Medical Society Alliance ‘Serving with Grace Award’ to Heather Tanner.

Heather is the wife of Dr. Jason Tanner. Jason is completing his family practice residency and has begun practicing at Adams County Memorial Hospital. Heather is an amazing example of ‘serving with grace’. She has supported Jason throughmedical school, residency and now as he begins a busy Heather is mother to one-year-old Colton. Heather and Jason have had an incredibly busy year with Colton arriving early and having complex medical needs. As she tirelessly cares for Colton, she continues to support the Alliance in a variety of ways. She has served our organization as the family practice residency liaison, membership committee co-chair, Gala committee member, and now president-elect. In each area where Heather has been involved, she displays a passion and knowledge that has been a true blessing. Heather is always willing and ready to help out or jump in when or wherever there is a need, and accompanies it with her beautiful smile.

She embodies Grace’s ability to support her spouse, care emotionally and physically for her son, actively live out her faith, dedicate time and talents to our organization serving the Fort Wayne community and do all of this in a way that seems effortless. During these days when people’s lives are so busy and there are simply not enough hours in a day, we would like to recognize these ‘women of excellence’: both Grace Mastrangelo and Heather Tanner for being examples of women in our local community who “serve with grace”.
